Angara Supports Push for ₱50,000 Starting Salary for Public School Teachers

In a promising development for the country’s education sector, Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Sonny Angara has expressed support for the proposal to raise the starting monthly salary of public school teachers to ₱50,000.

During a meeting earlier this week with the Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT), Angara shared his positive stance on the initiative. ACT chairman Vladimir Quetua, who was present at the discussion, said Angara did not object to the proposed wage hike. However, Angara clarified that while he is willing to support the move, he may not lead the advocacy himself. “He said he has no problem with the salary increase, and although he won't primarily push for it, he will help in advancing the proposal,” Quetua shared.

The proposal for salary adjustment was filed in Congress by ACT party-list Representative Antonio Tinio and Kabataan party-list Representative Renee Louise Co, aiming to provide fair compensation and uplift the morale of the country’s public educators. The bill is part of a broader effort to address long-standing issues of underpayment and poor working conditions faced by teachers across the Philippines.
